9:20 Watching the game live at Groton School in Groton, the middle of nowhere Massachusetts, with Michigan fan Luke Holey. As an Ohio State fan I’m pretty jealous at this point, frickin Wichita State. We’ve been asked if we are being social tonight; the answer of course is no way, THIS is our social life (quote courtesy of Luke). Trey Burke is a guy who I still can’t believe isn’t on OHIO State. You’re from Columbus and you decide on Michigan, c’mon man.
9:23 These Capital One commercials are starting to annoy me. Lesson to advertisers; don’t play the same commercials over and over again, it just pisses us off. Quickly followed by one of the greatest commercials I’ve ever seen. You put Kareem, Magic, Bird, and Russell, and you get greatness every time.
9:25 Tip-off. There are a TON of Michigan fans and they quickly erupt when McGeary absolutely blocks the s--- out of Fair as KG would say. First bucket a deep three from Robinson the third.
9:28 Speaking of scoring boy has this tournament not had much of it, all these games have scores in the forties, can someone please consistently put the ball in the basket.
9:31 Michigan is rebounding everything on the offensive glass; Syracuse can’t put a body on these players.
9:32 Can the black hockey player in the commercial just come and say what everyone’s thinking? Kareem, etc. commercial on again, yes it is still amazing. Kudos to AT&T, first good commercial I’ve seen in a while.
9:33 The Boss Button on the March Madness Live site has saved me at least three times. At least.
9:37 Syracuse fan Parker Banks comes in right when Stauskas puts up an air ball; there’ve been a ton of those this year. I’m calling the over under on time in which Luke kicks Parker out of the room at 20 minutes. I’m going under. 14-14 with 10:47 left in first half.
9:43 CJ Fair has nine points so far. Lefty shots just bother me some way like the right arm was created to shoot and left arm just… wasn’t. It looks unnatural. Don’t believe me? Youtube Chuck Hayes free throws and you will.
9:45 McGary just ran a nice fast break, any big man that can dribble up the court and dish like that has my respect. 20-17 Michigan.
9:49 I’m loving this Southwest commercial. It’s been trashed online, but hey good song, confidant looking people, I feel motivated. Time for ten pushups. Oh wait I can’t do 2 pushups.
9:50 Spike Albrecht makes a three; he had 48 total points this regular season, go figure. 24-17 Michigan.
9:53 I feel like I play for the fighting snails from the Buffalo Wild Wings commercial and I’m very proud of it. We’re IN!!!!!
9:54 Another thing about this particular tournament, every team clanks free throws, in some games I get surprised when they do make one. It feels like the combined average is 30%
9:57 McGary is wide open under the basket for at least five seconds, instead Spike Albrecht decides to launch a deep three with the shot clock winding down. Of course he buries it.
9:58 Rakeem Christmas clanks two free throws. I feel vindicated. Subplot of this game, four minutes left in the first half and Trey Burke hasn’t scored yet, but Michigan is still up by seven. Things look good for them, 28-21.
10:02 Bobby Knight looks like the biggest tool in this Applebees commercial. Parker pulls out the Chris Webber taunts, which is a go to with all Michigan fans. Luke has no response.
10:03 Michael Carter Williams has no points and two fouls. Syracuse really needs to get him going,
10:05 Carter Williams with a layup, his first score of the game. Momentum?
10:06 Nope Trey Burke hits for three (his first points), and Michigan gets the ball back for the final shot of the half. 36-25 Michigan.
10:08 Hardaway takes a bad shot at the buzzer. Syracuse enters the half with its largest deficit at this point in the game all season.
10:12 Kareem commercial, its officially the first commercial this year I’ve youtubed, which instantly promotes it to hall of fame status, along with the kid in the Dark Vader Volkswagon and the Detroit coming back with Eminem commercial.
10:14 MUST HAVE!! wheat thins. Got to love that dandruff commercial… I don’t have dandruff where are all the babes??
10:16 Luke has a tough choice, cover his orange Tigers and Knicks posters (his favorite teams), or face the wrath of the college basketball gods. He’s in the process of removing everything orange from his room, shorts, and shirts. I remember one time when the Cubs were down by two runs I Soriano hit a single and. The Cubs scored four runs and won the game. I’m telling you all of this is real and works. I’M NOT CRAZY!!
10:19 Sir Charles at the half: “as a coach sometimes you have to…you can’t zone play... down man ten points,” Ahhhh What?
10:24 Luke removes a power strip, backpack, pencil, and rubiks cube. “Damn why’s everything so orange?” These are the types of serious questions you contemplate as a sports fan.
10:29 Back from the half and bathroom break. Neither team has great numbers but Michigan has chucked up and made more. That strategy didn’t work for South Dakota ST. I’m pretty sure Nate Walters went 4 for 28 from three; oh wait those were Marshall Henderson’s numbers. Walters made a couple more shots.
10:31 Michigans first turnover in last 17 minutes, that team has some great ball handlers: Burke, Hardaway, etc.
10:33 Fair with another layup, 36-29 Michigan.
10:35 March Madness live is buffering. I’ve never panicked more than when my fantasy draft was lagging one time. I pounded on my floor and screamed at the top of my lungs before my dog and parents came in. My dad was holding an umbrella in his hands and waving it around wildly. They found me on my bed curled up in the fetal position whimpering. Yes this happened last year.
10:39 These two kids have been mopping the sweat off the court floor. I would fail high school to get that chance. Well I’m already going to fail geometry this term so maybe I’m not that far off. 43-32 Michigan
10:42 inspiring Southwest commercial again. I should get started on my homework tomorrow morning, or afternoon, or at the last minute Monday morning.
10:44 Jeremy Lin has never looked as Asian as in this 60 minutes promo.
A couple offensive rebounds for Syracuse and a nice put back, 43-35 Michigan.
10:46 Trey Burke only has three points in this game. Michigan needs him to step up and Marshawn Lynch put the team on his back this game with Syracuse pulling closer and closer. If you’ve never seen the Marshawn Lynch Determination video, watch it now. It will change you.
10:50 “It’s not your fault you’re not studying for your midterms.” The commercial is right; my textbooks don’t have buzzer beaters and slam dunks. When I explain to my teachers why I didn’t do the homework that’s my new excuse.
10:52 Kareem high five commercial. I really want to high five someone tall now. John Cecil?
10:54 CJ Fair scores again he has 18 this game. 45-41 Michigan. It’s looking like a game that’s coming down the stretch.
10:57 Michigan is playing hesitant and scared. They’re starting to turn the ball over. This is a team that never turns the ball over, and their turnovers are more of their offence then Syracuse’s zone defense.
11:00 Fair hits again. 48-45 Michigan.
11:02 “Fair hits again, but this time it’s McGary’s face” Luke adds in nervous humor. It’s hard to remain calm. I remember this time when the Cubs were in the playoffs. Ganme one was on and I was on the edge of my seat, holding my hair and praying with every pitch. We still lost 11-5 but you can get the idea.
11:05 X the hockey player comes in and tells us that basketball is boring while hockey is the most exciting game to watch ever. Thanks X.
11:06 Burke comes up way short on a drive, he’s just off tonight. He immediately follows that up with a missed free throw. Player of the Year has to play like one in these games.
11:12 Big turnover by Michigan. Syracuse takes it on the fastbreak Triche to Fair for the score. 53-47, these are the plays Syracuse has to make.
11:14 Tough call on Carter Williams, I thought he had his feet set. In big games I’ve learned that if my team loses a good reliable complaint are the refs. In the Nba thought I’m always more suspicious after Lakers-Kings, 2006 DWade to the line finals, and the calls that always go the present Heat’s way EVERY DAMN TIME.
11:15 Clutch free throws from Hardaway Jr. He was 4/7 in the tournament before those.
11:16 Hardaway Jr. draws the charge on Carter-Williams, who has no fouled out. Only two points for him, disappointing in terms of his NBA draft appeal.
11:17 The last minutes of these games go on and on. I was watching the last three minutes of the Norfolk St. -Missouri game on youtube during break and it took fifteen real life minutes.
11:18 James Southerland for three!! One point game, and Trey Burke going to the line.
11:19 Misses the first, but is able to pull himself together for the second one.
11:20 Another wild sequence ensues where Triche fouls out and Michigan makes one of two free throws. 59-56 Michigan.
11:23 Syracuse puts up a wild shot and the games over. Final Score 61-56 Michigan
11:25 Overall it was a very messy game but still exciting. I’ll be watching in study hall Monday night armed with the boss button.
